A stone celt is a prehistoric Native American ground stone tool, essentially an ungrooved axe head (pronounced "selt"). These were crafted by pecking and polishing hard stones like basalt, jadeite, gneiss, or greenstone to create a sharp cutting edge on one end, while the opposite end (the poll) was often blunt or rounded for hafting into a wooden handle.

Celts served as versatile woodworking tools—used for felling trees, chopping wood, shaping timber, digging, or even as wedges/adzes for various tasks. They represent an evolution from earlier grooved stone axes, becoming more common in many regions during the Woodland period and later, though they appear in earlier contexts too.
