Hand Carved from Antler and Steatite of a Figure Holding a Bow and a Spear with Two Small Seals Dancing on an Antler Stand

In Very Good Condition

Inuit artists have long created mixed-media scenes and sculptures combining steatite (soapstone) and caribou antler. artnunavik.ca Steatite is a soft, talc-rich metamorphic stone used for oil lamps (qulliqs) and later for detailed figurative carvings of people, animals, hunters, and daily life. It allows fine detail because of its relative softness. waddingtons.ca Caribou antler is hard bone used for smaller carvings, bas-relief surface work, or as add-on elements such as tools, harpoons, tusks, drums, or entire assembled tableaus. Artists frequently saw, file, peg, or glue antler pieces together, sometimes incorporating the antler’s natural curves and points. In regions with harder stone, antler is especially useful for detailing or for constructing multi-figure scenes.
