Michael Romero (born 1964) and Robin “Shy-Yai-Zta” Romero (born 1968) are full-blooded Acoma Pueblo artists who work collaboratively. They learned traditional hand-coiling and natural-pigment techniques as teenagers and specialize in finely detailed etched designs. Common motifs include hummingbirds, deer, elk, wolves, floral patterns, geometric Acoma elements, and kachina dancers. Pieces are typically signed “M & R Romero, Acoma, N.M.,” “M. R. Romero, Acoma Pueblo, NM,” or similar variations. pueblodirect.com They are related to other Acoma potters such as Deborah Aragon, Gertrude Romero, and Wilbert Aragon. Their work is known for precise line work, textural contrast from etching after firing, and use of traditional black, white, and red slips.
