Knife blades are often made from elongated flakes or blades (at least twice as long as wide) with sharp lateral edges. They could be used handheld or hafted (attached to handles). Many were bifacial (shaped on both sides). Simple unmodified sharp flakes served as expedient "knives" for butchering, cutting plants, or processing materials.
