The Great Lakes Rectangular Basket is a style of traditional woodsplint basketry associated with Native American tribes in the Great Lakes region (such as Ojibwe/Anishinaabe, Ho-Chunk/Winnebago, Potawatomi, Menominee, and others). These are often made from black ash (Fraxinus nigra) splints, a material prized for its flexibility after the wood is pounded to separate the growth rings into thin, pliable strips.
