Gullah sweetgrass baskets are hand-woven, coiled masterpieces created by the Gullah Geechee people of the South Carolina and Georgia Lowcountry. As one of the oldest African American art forms in the US, artisans use sweetgrass, bulrush, pine needles, and palmetto strips to craft these durable works of functional  The tradition originated in West Africa and was brought to the Americas by enslaved peoples, who originally used wide, flat "fanner" baskets to winnow and process rice. Today, these iconic, aromatic baskets are highly prized as folk art and can be found at local stands or purchased from master weavers.
