Nuvadi Dawahoya was Born in 1976 on the Hopi Reservation, Nuvadi began carving in 1995 at age 19. He uses traditional tools—sharp knives for shaping, wood burners for texturing, and natural earth pigments for painting—on cottonwood root sealed with polyurethane to highlight the grain. He's best known for his Butterfly Maiden (a maiden kachina he helped popularize in contemporary form) and the whimsical Warrior Mouse Kachina. His work emphasizes cultural storytelling, with intricate details that reflect Hopi spirituality. Nuvadi draws inspiration from his sons, Dion and Austin, hoping they'll carry on the family tradition.
