Nataska serves as a chief among the ogre Katsinam, acting as an uncle or guardian to Soyok Wuhti (the Monster Woman). His primary role enforces good behavior among children. During Hopi rituals (particularly in Powamu or Bean Dance ceremonies on First and Second Mesa villages), men dressed as Nataska and other ogres visit homes, make terrifying noises (like dragging saws on the ground), demand food, and threaten to kidnap or eat misbehaving children if offerings are insufficient. Parents "bargain" with the ogres by providing food, ultimately saving the children and reinforcing lessons about discipline and community contribution.
