Hand Coiled Bowl with Geometric Pattern in Painted Black on Red Clay
Excellent Condition
Hopi Pueblo pottery is a revered tradition originating from the Hopi people, who reside on three mesas in northeastern Arizona. The Hopi, meaning "Peaceful People," have crafted pottery for centuries using hand-coiled techniques passed down through generations. This method involves building vessels from coils of local clay, scraping and sanding for smoothness, applying slips and paints derived from natural minerals and plants, and firing in outdoor pits using manure for fuel. The result is distinctive buff-colored pieces often featuring polychrome designs in terracotta, black, and cream tones, with fire-blushed surfaces ranging from yellow to orange.
