Kim Seyesnem Obrzut is famous for her fine art bronze sculptures, early hand-coiled white clay pottery figures mounted on a wooden pedestal, or a bronze figure intricately patinated to resemble natural wood. Because traditional Hopi law strictly dictates that women are not permitted to carve traditional wooden Katsina (Kachina) dolls, Obrzut bypassed this cultural restriction by carving and sculpting her stylized Hopi Maidens out of clay or casting them into bronze. Despite not carving the figures from wood itself, her work remains deeply tied to wood because she mounts her sculptures on custom, 360-degree spinning wooden bases, and her grandfather was a prominent Hopi wood Katsina carver.
