A Hopi Pueblo carved pottery jar by Marty and Elvira Naha Nampeyo represents an exceptional collaboration by a highly regarded husband-and-wife artisan team. They are renowned for advancing the deeply detailed, contemporary sgraffito (incised) redware technique.
Elvira Polacca Naha Nampeyo (born 1968) is the daughter of legendary potter Tom Polacca and the great-granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano, the matriarch who single-handedly revived ancient Hopi pottery styles. Marty
Naha Nampeyo (born 1970) is the son of Emma Naha. He married Elvira in 1991, learning the intricacies of deep-carved pottery from Elvira and her father, Tom. Their signature style honors generations of ancestral knowledge. Their award-winning work is housed in prominent institutions like the Heard Museum and the Museum of Indian Arts & Cultures.
