Ted Pavatea is a Hopi-Tewa artist (born 1952) from Hano Village (Tewa Pueblo) on First Mesa, Arizona. He comes from an artistic family—son of potter Garnet Pavatea and carver Womack Pavatea—and is well-known for hand-carving and painting traditional Hopi Kachina (Katsina) dolls, including clowns (Koyala/Koshare), ogres, and other figures. He works in wood carving (from miniatures to larger pieces) and also does some painting and design work.
