Ros George is a renowned Hopi katsina (kachina) carver, born in 1948 in Tuba City, Arizona, and raised in the Moenkopi village on the Hopi Reservation. He belongs to the Reed Clan and began carving in 1973. He's widely recognized as a top-tier, award-winning artist known for his contemporary full-figure carvings, clean and classic style, and deep spirituality. His work appears in museums, private collections worldwide, and books like Hopi Kachina Dolls and Their Carvers by Theda Bassman and Kachina Dolls: The Art of Hopi Carvers by Helga Teiwes. Teiwes describes him as a very spiritual person whose carvings express his "Hopiness," cultural meaning, and care for life.
The Deer Katsina (Sowi'ingtaqa or similar variants like Sowi-ingwa for Deer Dancer) symbolizes the deer as a provider of food and is associated with plentiful game, winter snow for harvests, and social dances. Deer katsinam appear in ceremonies honoring the animal's sacrifice in hunting.
