Marlin Pinto (1957–2021) was a renowned Hopi carver, born at Zuni Pueblo but of Hopi heritage (descended from the famous potter Nampeyo of Hano through his maternal line). He began carving katsina (also spelled kachina) dolls at age 11 and became celebrated for his highly detailed, one-piece cottonwood root carvings made exclusively with a pocketknife—no power tools—for a natural, exquisite finish. His works, especially larger figures and humorous clown (Koshare or Koosa) depictions, are prized for their lifelike detail, charm, and cultural accuracy.
