Kevin Pochoema (sometimes rendered or misread as Pochagm/Pochima/Pochoema) is a respected Hopi Pueblo carver known for high-quality, detailed contemporary Katsina (Kachina) dolls.
Born in 1965 in Flagstaff, Arizona; member of the Greasewood Clan. He is recognized as one of the finer contemporary Hopi carvers, with works featured in books, exhibitions, and prominent collections. Known for exceptional detail, dynamic poses (often capturing motion), realistic anatomy (hands, feet, joints), intricate feathering, painted attire, and a sense of energy/life in the figures. His Eagle carvings stand out for elaborate wings that can take days to detail.
The Eagle Kachina (Kwahu or Kwahuh) represents the eagle, a powerful symbol in Hopi culture. It rules the sky, embodies strength and vision, and acts as a messenger carrying prayers to the Creator. Eagle dancers imitate the bird's movements and calls in ceremonies, often during night dances or specific events like Powamu.
