Watson Namoki, a well-known Hopi artist from the Third Mesa village of Kykotsmovi. Watson Namoki (born 1963) is a prolific carver of contemporary and traditional Kachina dolls, often from cottonwood root, and has created Frog Kachinas among many others. He's self-taught by observing other carvers, has exhibited at major venues like the Santa Fe Indian Market and Heard Museum, and comes from a family with strong ties to Hopi artistry (his paternal clan is Fire Clan).
The Hopi Green Frog Kachina Doll (known as Paqua or Pauataga in Hopi tradition) is a representation of the Frog Katsina, a spirit being associated with bringing rain and symbolizing the vital role of water in growing crops in the arid Southwest. This Katsina is relatively rare in appearances and is often linked to water clans, serving as a harbinger of moisture and fertility.
