Hopi Pueblo Hanging Rattler (also known as the Aya Katsina) Kachina dolls are traditional figures hand-carved from cottonwood root, specifically designed to be hung on walls rather than standing on a base. The name "Rattler" is the kachina's case mask, which resembles a traditional Hopi gourd rattle. These dolls serve as educational tools given to Hopi girls and new brides to teach them about the spirits that bring rain, fertility, and moral lessons.
