The Badger Katsina specifically acts as a healer — he cures the sick and is associated with prayers for the growth of medicinal herbs and roots. He possesses deep knowledge of the earth and plants, reflecting the badger's natural digging abilities and tenacity. 

In broader Hopi and Zuni traditions, the badger serves as a directional guardian of the south, symbolizing strength, persistence, resourcefulness, and the ability to overcome challenges. He often appears in mixed kachina dances and ceremonies like the Water Serpent ceremony at First Mesa, and he dances for rain to benefit the crops.
