Philander Shelton is a respected Hopi carver known for detailed, expressive Katsina dolls. His style often includes fine carving, vibrant painting, and attention to costume details. Other Shelton family members are also noted Hopi carvers, but Philander has his own body of work in both small and full-sized dolls. 

Badger Katsinas appear in certain dances and ceremonies. They often feature a case mask with a snout, feather ears, a Douglas fir or evergreen ruff, a painted concha belt, an embroidered sash, and a foxtail. The "Elder" or "Older" designation likely emphasizes the wise, mature aspect of this healing figure.
