Hopi Pueblo Kachina dolls (also properly called katsina or tihu figures) are traditional carvings made by Hopi artists from the root of the cottonwood tree. These figures represent katsinam—spiritual beings that act as intermediaries between the Hopi people and the natural world, bringing rain, fertility, harmony, and lessons about life. Traditionally, they serve as educational tools given to children (especially girls) during ceremonies to teach them about the various katsinam and Hopi religious traditions.
