Nina Poleahla was a Hopi artist from Arizona active in the 20th century, known for carving traditional Katsina (Kachina) dolls from cottonwood root. These dolls, called tithu in Hopi, represent spirit beings (katsinam) that play central roles in Hopi religious and ceremonial life, teaching about nature, balance, rain, and community. While traditionally gifted to Hopi girls as educational tools rather than toys, many carvers like Poleahla created them for sale as art.
