Kivas are traditional underground (or partially underground) ceremonial chambers used by Pueblo peoples, including the Hopi. They serve as sacred spaces for rituals, initiations, meetings, and preparations for dances. Access is typically via a ladder through a roof entrance, symbolizing emergence from the underworld in Hopi cosmology. Murals and symbolic elements often decorate the interiors. Kachina ceremonies and initiations for children frequently take place in kivas, especially in winter/early year events.
