Darren Pooyouma is an acclaimed Hopi Native American woodcarver from the village of Old Oraibi (Third Mesa) who is highly regarded for carving authentic, traditional Hopi Kachina dolls (Katsin Tihu). Born in 1976 and active since 1990, Pooyouma hand-carves his figures using traditional cottonwood root and mineral pigments. Among his most culturally fascinating and creative works are his Koshare (Hano Clown) Football Kachina dolls, which masterfully blend sacred Pueblo ceremonial imagery with contemporary themes.
