The "Death Fly" Kachina, known in Hopi as Mastop (or Māstop), is a specific spirit being in Hopi tradition. It appears in pairs during the Soyal Ceremony (the winter solstice ritual), specifically on the next-to-last day, and is associated with fertility prayers from deceased ancestors to Hopi women, as well as themes of regeneration and the cycle of life.
These kachina dolls (properly called tithu or katsina figures) are traditionally hand-carved from cottonwood root by Hopi artisans and painted with natural pigments. Miniature versions, often 1-3 inches tall, are popular collectibles and are frequently signed by the carver on the base for authenticity, especially pieces made for sale since the mid-20th century.
