Gordon Crook (Hopi/Havasupai heritage, often residing on the Havasupai reservation) was a recognized carver active in the late 20th century, known for detailed miniature and small-to-medium kachina dolls carved from cottonwood root, hand-painted with traditional pigments, and frequently signed on the base. His works include various katsinas like Ogre, Zuni Warrior, Perkley Pear, Sunset Crater, White Buffalo, and others. The Great Horned Owl Katsina (Mongwa) represents wisdom, intelligence, keen observation, and protection—qualities the Hopi associate with the owl's hunting prowess and nocturnal vigilance. It appears in ceremonies to impart these attributes or as a night guardian spirit. Traditional depictions feature: A rounded head with prominent horn-like ear tufts (often exaggerated in carvings). Large, staring eyes (yellow or white with black pupils). Brown/gray/white feather patterning on the body. A beak, sometimes with a ruff or collar of fur/feathers. Accessories like natural feathers on the head or body for added realism.
