The Great Horned Owl Katsina (Mongwa) is a powerful and respected figure in Hopi tradition, symbolizing intelligence, wisdom, keen observation, protection, and discipline. As the leader of the warrior katsinam, Mongwa is called upon to maintain order—often appearing in dances to "knock sense" into the clowns (like the Mudheads) for non-Hopi behavior or mischief. The owl's nocturnal hunting prowess also ties it to agriculture, as it helps keep fields free of rodents. Its presence brings attributes of sharp vision, vigilance, and guidance. A rounded head with prominent horn-like ear tufts (exaggerated in carvings to emphasize the great horned owl).

Large, intense eyes (often yellow/white with black pupils for a staring effect). Brown, gray, or mottled feather patterning on the body, sometimes with a ruff or collar. A beak, and in some versions, yucca whips or other warrior elements. Painted details in earthy tones, with minimal accessories at miniature scale.

At just 1.25 inches, this falls into the ultra-miniature category—very popular in the late 20th century (especially 1970s–1990s) for the tourist/collector market. These tiny dolls are hand-carved from cottonwood root, meticulously painted (often with fine brushes for the eyes, tufts, and feathers), and sometimes signed on the base or underside despite the small size. The extreme miniaturization requires skilled carving to capture the owl's regal and watchful essence in such a compact form.
