Hopi Pueblo Mudhead Kachina Doll By Ramon Albert Sr.

Ramon Albert Sr. (1927–2001) was known for carving respectful, traditional-style katsinam with solid painting, natural or simple materials (feathers, fur, leather/yarn accents), and clean lines. His dolls are often signed on the base (look for “Ramon Albert,” “Hotevilla, AZ,” or a small hand-drawn rabbit hallmark). Similar examples of his Broad Face dolls measure around 12–13 inches tall and appear in museum collections and the secondary market.

The Mudhead is a popular clown figure in Hopi ceremonies. It is also known by its Zuni name, Koyemsi. The name "Mudhead" comes from the rounded, mud-covered mask with bulbous features (often looking like mud balls forming eyes, mouth, etc.).  Acts as an entertainer, clown, disciplinarian, announcer, and joker during dances. They drum, dance, organize games/races, give prizes, and provide comic relief while teaching moral lessons. They appear in many Hopi ceremonies. According to Hopi lore, the Mudhead was among the first beings to emerge into the Fourth World (our current world), emerging covered in mud. Zuni lore ties it to cautionary tales (e.g., against certain taboos). It bridges the sacred Katsinam and the community.
