Hand Made Mudhead Rattle and Adorned with Feathers

In Good Condition with Some Wear

Hopi Pueblo Mudhead rattles with a black or dark-painted handle are traditional ceremonial items, most often made as functional gourd rattles painted and carved to represent the Mudhead figure. These are typically constructed from a dried gourd, with a wooden (often cottonwood) handle attached. The gourd is painted a reddish-brown or mud-toned color to evoke the iron-rich clay that covers the Mudhead’s mask and body in ceremony.
