The Hopi Pueblo Pahlik Mana Kachina Doll (also spelled Palhik Mana, Palahiko Mana, or Polik Mana) by Jonathan Day is a beautiful example of contemporary Hopi katsina (kachina) carving. Jonathan Day, Sr. (born 1951 in Hotevilla, Arizona) is a renowned Hopi artist known for his sculptural, dynamic style that captures the natural poses and movement of kachinas as they appear during dances. He began carving full-time in 1980, emphasizing the wood's natural grain and realistic stances, often drawing from his intimate knowledge of Hopi ceremonies.
Pahlik Mana, commonly known as the Butterfly Maiden, is one of the most popular and beloved figures in Hopi tradition. Though not strictly a "true" kachina spirit in some classifications, she represents a female dance personage (kachin-mana) who embodies grace, fertility, and life-giving qualities. She is associated with bringing rain to nourish crops, pollinating fields like a butterfly dancing from flower to flower, and symbolizing renewal in the arid desert environment. In ceremonies like the Butterfly Dance (a traditional rite often involving young women), she invokes blessings for abundance, corn growth, and harmony with nature. Both men and women can portray her in dances, depending on the village or mesa traditions.
