Les Namingha (b. 1967) is a contemporary Hopi-Tewa/Zuni potter known for hand-coiled polychrome pottery that blends traditional Hopi-Tewa and Zuni designs with modernist, abstract, and innovative elements. He was born at Zuni Pueblo to a Zuni mother (Irene Vicenti) and Hopi-Tewa father (Emerson Namingha, Jr.). He is the grandson of Rachel Namingha Nampeyo, great-grandson of Annie Healing, and great-great-grandson of the renowned potter Nampeyo of Hano. He learned traditional Hopi pottery techniques from his aunt, master potter Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo, while also drawing on a BFA in Design from Brigham Young University (1992). He incorporates native clays, traditional outdoor (often sheep-dung) firing for many pieces, and sometimes acrylics or layered contemporary approaches. His work has earned awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and Heard Museum Market and appears in museums and private collections.
