Hand Coiled Dish with an Orange Field and a Painted Dark Brown and Deep Orange Geometric Design by Grace Chapella

In Very Good Condition

Grace Chapella (1874–1980), also known as "White Squash Blossom" or "The White Pottery Lady," was a prominent Hopi-Tewa potter from Tewa Village (Hano) on First Mesa of the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. She belonged to the Bear Clan and was a key figure in the continuation of Hopi-Tewa pottery traditions.

She learned pottery-making as a child from her mother (TaTung Pawbe) and her famous neighbor, Nampeyo of Hano, the influential reviver of ancient Sikyatki-style pottery. Chapella became known for her high-quality, often off-white or light-colored pots with traditional designs inspired by ancient pottery shards she collected. Her signature motifs included butterflies/moths (now associated with her family), rain birds, geometric patterns, and elements from Sikyatki ruins. She signed some of her work, which was less common early on, and continued potting into advanced age (e.g., pieces made at age 99).
