Anderson Koinva is a renowned Hopi silversmith from the Second Mesa village of Shongopovi on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. He specializes in traditional Hopi overlay techniques, where intricate designs are meticulously cut from one layer of sterling silver and applied over another for a textured, storytelling effect. Koinva learned his craft from his father-in-law, the esteemed Hopi artist Bernard Dawahoya, and draws inspiration from his grandfather, the legendary silversmith Paul Saufkie. His hallmarks typically feature his initials "AK" or stylized motifs, and his pieces often incorporate Hopi symbolism like corn maidens, kachinas, mazes, and tribal patterns, reflecting cultural narratives of agriculture, spirituality, and nature.
