Loren Phillips (1942–2025) was a renowned Hopi Pueblo artist from the village of Moencopi, Arizona. He was primarily celebrated as a master carver of traditional Hopi katsina (kachina) dolls, with his intricate, realistic works earning top prizes at major markets like Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum.
He was also an accomplished silversmith, creating jewelry in the classic Hopi overlay technique. This involves layering two sheets of sterling silver, cutting designs into the top layer, oxidizing the background for contrast, and polishing the raised motifs — often featuring traditional Hopi symbols like corn plants, kokopelli, birds, bears, butterflies, or pueblo scenes.
Hopi Pueblo sterling silver necklaces are renowned for their distinctive overlay technique, a style developed by Hopi artists in the 1940s. This method involves cutting intricate designs into one sheet of sterling silver, soldering it onto a second oxidized and textured sheet for contrast (creating bold, raised patterns against a darker background), and often finishing with a polished or matte surface.
