Nathan Fred Sr. Nathan Fred Sr., a renowned Hopi silversmith, is known for his mastery of the traditional Hopi overlay technique, a method where intricate designs are cut into one piece of silver and soldered onto another to create depth and contrast, often with an oxidized background.
He learned this craft at Hopicrafts, a cooperative established in 1962 in Kykotsmovi on Third Mesa by Emory Sekaquaptewa and his brother, which played a pivotal role in developing unique designs and employing skilled silversmiths. His work frequently features culturally significant motifs such as Kokopelli, kachinas, the sun, bears, and eagles.
Nathan Fred Sr. has been recognized for his contributions to Hopi jewelry arts, with his pieces—including cuff bracelets, earrings, money clips, and pendants—being featured in galleries and collections. His signature "NF" mark is found on many of his works, affirming his identity as a master craftsman.
