Storyteller dolls are a modern Pueblo pottery tradition that began in the mid-1960s with Helen Cordero of Cochiti Pueblo. She created seated figures with open mouths, surrounded by smaller children or listeners, to honor oral storytelling and cultural transmission. The form spread quickly to other Rio Grande, and artists adapted it to include animals, koshares/clowns, Mudheads, and other figures.
