Andrew L. Sahmie Sr. is a Hopi-Tewa artist from First Mesa (Polacca), Arizona, of the Corn Clan. He is a great-great-grandson of the renowned Hopi potter Nampeyo and comes from a prominent artistic family (including potter siblings and his wife, carver Ida Sahmie). He began carving kachinas around 1990, influenced by family members, and is known for detailed, expressive work in cottonwood with traditional paints, feathers, leather, fur, yarn, and other natural materials. His pieces are collected widely, including at the Heard Museum, and he is documented in references like Hopi Katsina: 1,600 Artist Biographies by Gregory Schaaf.
