The Toson variant has a distinctive role: it traditionally accompanies Soyoko (an ogre-like figure) on Third Mesa to demand finely ground sweet cornmeal from young girls. The Mudhead then tastes the meal to check its quality and sweetness. This figure is a "relative" within the Mudhead family rather than a true ogre, and its appearance in that specific role has become rarer in modern times.
