A Hopi Pueblo wicker peach basket is a traditional utilitarian basket crafted by Hopi artists, primarily from the Third Mesa in northeastern Arizona. These baskets are part of the rich Hopi basketry tradition, where wicker weaving is a specialty of Third Mesa weavers (while Second Mesa focuses more on coiled baskets).
A Peach Basket comes from their historical use in gathering and carrying peaches, which the Hopi have cultivated since Spanish introduction in the region. The Hopi term for this form is often kohoyngyapu. They feature a deeper, bowl-like shape with a plaited (braided) bottom similar to the center of a wicker tray, making them sturdy for harvest and daily use. Larger antique examples were made for tribal (Native) use, while many seen today are also produced as art or for the market.
