Hand Made School Basket with a Bulbous Body and Nice Patina

In Very Good Condition

Indian School baskets are early 20th-century coiled baskets (roughly 1900–1930) produced in or associated with federal/mission Indian boarding schools and commercial craft kits. They were common teaching projects in schools that instructed Native children. Students were often encouraged to copy traditional designs from their parents’ or tribal baskets, but the materials and construction were non-traditional: typically raffia weft on a willow warp, rather than the plant materials and techniques used in authentic tribal basketry. Similar kits were also marketed to non-Native buyers as a popular craft, so it is frequently impossible to determine whether a given example was made by a Native student, a non-Native hobbyist, or under mixed direction.
