Inuit (and related Yupik/Inupiat “Eskimo” peoples of Alaska and the Arctic) have a long tradition of carving ivory, including fossilized or ancient (subfossil) material from walrus, mammoth, and occasionally mastodon tusks. These materials were used for tools, ornaments, and later commercial art. “Fossilized ivory” in this context often means ancient, mineral-stained, or deeply patinated pieces recovered from permafrost, beaches, riverbanks, or old village sites rather than fully petrified stone.
