Mary Small (Kal-la-Tee, “New Indian Basket,” 1940–2024) was a respected Jemez Pueblo potter known for reviving and elevating traditional hand-coiled pottery at a time when much Jemez work had declined in quality. eyesofthepot.com +1 She learned pottery-making around age 8 from her mother, Perfectita Toya, using traditional methods: gathering and processing native clay, hand-coiling forms, applying natural slips and pigments (often with yucca brushes), and outdoor firing. She and her husband Ivan experimented extensively with materials to develop her signature blue/gray slip combined with burnt red/orange accents, along with distinctive designs. Her pottery is easily recognizable by this color palette and high craftsmanship.
