Caroline G. Loretto (commonly abbreviated as C. G. Loretto), a renowned Jemez Pueblo potter known for her finely crafted, hand-coiled vessels. Jemez pottery, including wedding vases, is a vibrant part of Native American Southwestern art, revived in the 20th century after a long hiatus.
Caroline Loretto is a master potter from Jemez Pueblo, celebrated for her exquisite polish, precise fine-line painting, and intricate motifs. She collaborates frequently with her sister, Geraldine Sandia, blending traditional techniques with modern flair. Her work is featured in major publications, including Southern Pueblo Pottery: 2000 Artist Biographies by Greg Schaaf and Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni by Al Hayes and John Blom.
Loretto's pottery often features spiraling water and rain patterns on polished red grounds, using black and cream clays for contrast. Her pieces are signed "C G Loretto, Jemez Pueblo" and emphasize balance, reflecting Jemez oral histories of renewal and harvest.
