Illinois Confederation (also called Illiniwek or Illini), a group of Algonquian-speaking tribes including the Kaskaskia, Cahokia, Peoria, Tamaroa, and Michigamea. These tribes lived primarily along the Illinois, Mississippi, and Kaskaskia Rivers, with villages often in western and central Illinois. By the time of European arrival in the late 1600s (e.g., French explorers like Marquette and Jolliet), the Illinois Confederation had declined due to disease, warfare (including conflicts with Iroquois and others), and pressures from northern tribes.
