Michael Kanteena (born September 1, 1959) is a renowned Native American potter from Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico. He is an award-winning artist best known for creating hand-coiled pottery that recreates and draws inspiration from ancient Ancestral Puebloan styles, including those from Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, Mimbres, and Anasazi traditions. Kanteena earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1981, after which he returned to Laguna to focus on traditional pottery-making techniques using local native clay sourced from the Laguna area. He has taught pottery workshops at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in Colorado and has exhibited his work at prestigious institutions like the Maxwell Museum in Albuquerque and the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe, as well as at events such as the Santa Fe Indian Market.
Laguna Pueblo pottery in general is thin-walled, uses a white slip base, and shares stylistic similarities with neighboring Acoma Pueblo, though Laguna traditions nearly faded after the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century. Kanteena is one of a small group of active Laguna potters reviving these methods, alongside artists like Max Early Jr. and Myron Sarracino. He signs his work "M. Kanteena, Laguna, NM."
