A Navajo concho belt (also spelled concha belt) is an iconic piece of Native American jewelry and regalia, traditionally handmade by Navajo (Diné) silversmiths. The term "concho" comes from the Spanish word concha, meaning "shell," referring to the oval or round silver plates that resemble shells.
These belts originated in the late 1800s when Navajo artisans adapted influences from Spanish metalwork, Plains Indian hair plates, and Mexican silversmithing techniques. Early versions were made from melted silver coins (often U.S. silver dollars). Over time, they evolved to include stamped designs, repousse' (hammered relief), and inlays of turquoise (sacred in Navajo culture for protection and harmony).
