Traditional Maliseet moccasins are primarily characterized by their soft-soled, pucker-toed construction. Unlike Plains tribes who utilized stiff rawhide soles, the Wolastoqiyik engineered footwear optimized for quiet movement across forested terrain covered in pine needles and leaves. The Pucker-Toe Stitch: Crafted usually from a single piece of heavy moosehide or thick deerskin, the leather sole is brought up around the sides of the foot. The front toe area (known as the vamp) is meticulously puckered and stitched to the upper, creating a signature gathered U-shape. Heel Seams: The heel portion of the moccasin features a classic structural vertical seam running straight up the back. Materials: Rugged, thick moosehide was preferred for working or hunting moccasins in the deep woods, whereas more flexible deerskin was reserved for everyday wear or highly decorated ceremonial styles.
