Macario Ortiz a prominent Mata Ortiz potter from the influential Ortiz family (which includes brothers like Nicolás and Eduardo/Félix Ortiz). Macario is recognized as one of the elite artists in the tradition—he pioneered the use of graphite around 1982 for smooth, shiny blackware surfaces after firing, and his work often includes precise geometric and figural designs. He has exhibited internationally and is featured in collections alongside masters like Juan Quezada.
Mata Ortiz pottery (also known as Casas Grandes pottery) is a renowned tradition of handmade ceramics from the small village of Mata Ortiz in Chihuahua, Mexico. It revives and innovates upon ancient Mogollon-style pottery from the nearby prehistoric Paquimé (Casas Grandes) archaeological site, which flourished between roughly 1000–1400 CE.
