Mata Ortiz pottery revives and reinterprets the Mogollon (Casas Grandes) pottery traditions from pre-Columbian times. The modern movement began in the 1960s–1970s when local resident Juan Quezada Celado experimented with techniques inspired by ancient shards he found in the desert. He taught himself to hand-coil, polish, and paint pottery without a wheel, using natural clays and mineral pigments. Quezada's work gained international attention in the 1970s, transforming the village into a thriving artistic community where hundreds of potters now work.
