A Mata Ortiz pottery jar signed by an artist named Lopez represents a highly collectible form of contemporary Mexican folk art. While specific biographical data on a master potter named Ruben Lopez is limited, the Lopez family is one of the most prominent, award-winning lineages in the small village of Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua. Collectors often cross-reference or verify signatures against other master craftsmen in the same family, such as Oralia Lopez (known for micro-fine geometric painting), Abel Lopez (wildlife sgraffito), Edmundo Lopez (optical-illusion labyrinth designs), or Ruben Rodriguez (famous for high-gloss, black-on-black jars).
