Tarahumara (Rarámuri) pottery jars with hide/sinew straps are traditional utilitarian vessels made by the indigenous Tarahumara (self-named Rarámuri) people of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in Chihuahua, northern Mexico.
These pieces are hand-built using the coil method (rolling clay into coils, stacking and smoothing them), without a potter’s wheel. They are typically fired in open flames, resulting in a rustic, primitive appearance with earthy tones (tan, brown, orange-red). Many feature simple slipped surfaces or minimal decoration.
